The former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowere, has called for the prosecution of those responsible for the arrest and prosecution of minors.
Naija News reported that President Bola Tinubu, on Monday ordered the release of minors who were charged to court on Friday for participating in the August hunger protest.
According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the President also directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to see to the welfare of the minors aged between 12 to 16 years.
“President Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of all the minors currently facing trial for involvement in the recent protests, and also directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to see to their welfare.
“The president’s directive is without prejudice to the ongoing legal proceedings,” Idris said.
The human rights activist also called for the release of all citizens who have been detained for participating in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria.
“Those responsible for their arrest, detention, and prosecution must be fished out and punished.
“The demand is for all the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters detained across Nigeria to be released unconditionally, immediately and adequately compensated,” Sowere said.
Tinubu’s order followed criticism from political cycles on the decision of the government to try the minors on charges of treason, terrorism and arson.
