The National Bureau of Statistics has said road taxes collected by state governments increased by 63 percent in 2023, emphasizing the growing role of transportation in states’ internal revenue generation.
NBS stated this in its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) report published on 29th October. The report disclosed that the total road tax collections rose to ₦40.14 billion in 2023, up from ₦24.57 billion in 2022.

According to the report, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) did not record any road tax revenue for the year.
However, Lagos State has the highest collection, with road tax revenue amounting to ₦16.74 billion, accounting for 41.7% of the total national figure for 2023.
Ebonyi State recorded the most dramatic increase, with a 3,804.32% surge, jumping from ₦72.95 million in 2022 to ₦2.85 billion in 2023.
Rivers State also showed substantial growth, with road tax revenue rising by 270.66% to ₦830.01 million from ₦223.93 million.
Sokoto State reported a 41.22% increase in collections, amounting to ₦194.66 million, while Yobe State’s revenue increased by 30.4% to ₦81.88 million.
In decline, Enugu State reported a 95.12% drop from ₦1.1 billion in 2022 to ₦53.47 million in 2023.
Katsina State’s road tax revenue fell sharply by 79.34%, down to ₦29.3 million from ₦141.81 million.
Niger State also faced a decrease of 53.41%, with collections dropping from ₦408.83 million to ₦190.49 million.
