Victor Boniface in Libya

German Bundesliga reigning champions, Bayer Leverkusen have shown their solidarity with their star player, Victor Boniface, who is currently held ‘hostage’ in Libya alongside his national teammates.

Victor Boniface has earlier taken to his X page to announce that he and other Super Eagles players, alongside the coaching crew, have been held hostage at a Libya airport after arriving in the country on Sunday, October 13, for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya.

Unfortunately for Boniface and his teammates, they are still held at the airport over 16 hours after touching down in the country. Due to the situation, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decided to withdraw the national team from the qualification game.

However, at the time of writing this report, the Super Eagles were still stuck at the airport, and the Nigerian embassy in Libya reportedly struggled to gain access to the national team.

Earlier this afternoon, 23-year-old Boniface took to his X page to share that it is getting scary that they are still stuck at the airport for almost 16 hours. He said he and his teammates wouldn’t mind losing the entire three points to Libya just to return to Nigeria.

“This is getting scary now
You guys can have the point
We just want to return to our country”,
the 2023-2024 German Bundesliga Rookie of the Year said.

His club, Bayer Leverkusen, took to the comments section of the post to assure him that the reigning German Bundesliga champions are with him amid the chaotic experience.

“Stay safe, Victor – we’re all thinking of you and your team-mates,” the club wrote in Boniface’s comments section.
