Bayer Leverkusen’s coach, Xabi Alonso, expressed admiration for Victor Boniface’s outstanding performance in their 4-1 triumph over Hoffenheim last Saturday.
Alonso emphasized that he anticipates even more from Victor Boniface, particularly in terms of defensive contributions when the team is not in possession.
Recall that in the 4-1 victory, the 23-year-old Boniface played a pivotal role in Die Werkself’s emphatic victory, contributing an assist for the opening goal and scoring twice to kick off his Bundesliga campaign for the 2024-2025 season.
Alonso believes that there is still room for growth in Boniface’s game. He stressed the importance of the striker’s defensive efforts, while also acknowledging his offensive skills.
“He can and must do more. He knows it, and the team needs it,” the Spanish tactician said.
The coach highlighted the significance of Boniface’s second goal against Hoffenheim last weekend, describing it as a crucial confidence booster for the young striker.
Note that Boniface’s remarkable performance marked a strong comeback to the team following a suspension for unprofessional behavior in his previous league appearance.
His standout display helped the defending champions recover from their recent defeat to RB Leipzig, which brought an end to their 35-match unbeaten league run.
The away victory at Hoffenheim extended Leverkusen’s unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga to 19 games, the second-longest in the division’s history.
It also propelled the team to fourth place in the league standings with six points, setting a positive tone ahead of their upcoming Champions League campaign.
Alonso has high expectations for Boniface this season, especially after the striker’s previous campaign was marred by a tendon injury that sidelined him from January to March.
As Leverkusen gears up for their midweek Champions League clash with Feyenoord, all eyes will be on Boniface to see if he can meet his coach’s expectations and deliver another outstanding performance on the continental stage.
