How to get Instagram dark mode

Instagram’s dark mode can help save energy (as Google research shows), it’s easier to see at night, the contrast can make it easier to read text and, above all, it just looks cool.

In recent months, developers have tried to update their applications with new color schemes (Google Chrome, Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter are being redesigned), and Instagram is one of the latest to offer this option.

However, allowing Instagram to go into dark mode is not as easy as switching to a switch in the application and not yet accessible to everyone. As Instagram boss Adam Mosery said in the tweet, you need to run the latest version of the mobile operating system – e.g. Android 10 or iOS 13 – to enjoy dark tones:

Starting today, you can use Instagram in dark mode on iOS 13 or Android 10. Activate dark mode on your mobile to try it. October 8, 2019

If you still have one of these operating systems, Instagram will automatically change color when you activate the device’s dark mode. There is no way to change the dark mode on Instagram itself, but hopefully this will change with future updates.
